Flood light is a lighting application specifically designed for outdoor or large area illumination which requires broad-beamed and high intensity light source. There are many types of floodlights varying upon usage and bulb types. The most common uses of floodlights are for security and garden lighting, sign and objects illumination, high-ceiling warehouse, stage and stadium lighting.

Traditional flood lights like Halogen PAR Flood light, Metal Halide or Sodium Vapor Lamps are easily found in flood light application with various performance concerns.


Halogen PAR Floodlight: Halogen lights are a widely used floodlight type and it is similar to the incandescent bulb but it is a bit more efficient and produces better light. Halogen bulbs have average life spans of 3,000 hours and they have a bad habit of also getting very hot so they are also usually used in outside applications with larger wattages.

Metal Halide and Sodium Vapor Lamps: These are the lights that usually have large wattages and huge lumen output because their technology is built in a way that as the bulb gets larger it gets more efficient so larger HID (High Intensity Discharge) fixtures makes more sense. These lights have from 75 to 150 lumen per watt of electricity efficiency, but they have a weak side because they usually run very hot so indoor applications can become dangerous.

LED lights have efficiency ranging from 50 - 150 lm/W, equally efficient to traditional bulbs. But the best benefit of LED flood lights is that they have up to and more than 50,000 hours life span that equates to more than 6 years of continuous running. This is an amazing achievement because no other light source can match these LED diodes in their life expectancy and they are also more efficient than most of the other contenders. One more thing where LED lights are better than other light sources is the light output depreciation rate when the bulb gets older as LED diodes have only up to 30 % less light output when they have been used for 10,000 to 25,000 hours. It means these lights do not die abruptly; instead they dim gradually and make time for maintenance. In comparison Fluorescent and Incandescent lights can get less than 50 % of the initial light as they get older so once again LED diodes are better.

LED Flood light basically eliminates the need for frequent bulb replacement which specifically takes abundant efforts due to high and remote lamp placements. It will considerably cut off an amount of hazardous waste and more importantly, approximately 80% of energy-consumption compared to traditional lamps. And if heat emission is the major problem with both HID and Halogen Flood lights, LED Floodlights do not emanate heat and conserve maximum of supplied electricity. The technology is ideal for cold storage warehouses and areas with high safety requirements.


The most concerned issue with outdoor lightings is the affect of temperature and weather changes on their functions. LED flood lights are impervious to temperature fluctuations and environmental conditions. Unlike some other lights, LEDs remain stable and functional even in freezing conditions.
