7 Reasons to SWITCH to LED Tubes

AT LAST, LED technology in general lighting is now feasible from both cost and application perspectives. LEDs claim many advantages over traditional lamps (i.e., incandescent, HID, and fluorescent), namely durability and longevity. Despite these benefits, the most obvious challenge with LED lighting is its high initial purchase price tag — a reality that undoubtedly stems from its newness to the market. Like all new technologies, however, the cost eventually decreases thanks to efficiency in production!

Nonetheless, it is easier said than done when it comes to LED replacement. Our clients often ask for no less than 7 reasons to make their decisions, and so should you. Below are the top 7 convincing arguments to lay on the table in your next administrative meeting of why your corporation should adopt LEDs as the next strategy to energy-saving.

1. Energy Saving

Energy cost has become the Philippines’ most related topic when the country currently announced to have the highest electricity rate in Asia (Average of 11-14php/kwh) (1).In fact, the higher the power (kwh) consumed, the higher is the charge rate of Meralco(2).It also means the larger you are as a Filipino organization, the more urgent it is for you to find a solution to the cost constraint.

Switching from 40W traditional fluorescent tube to 18W LED tube has made dramatic changes in energy consumption for many commercial establishments in the Philippines. The action has shaved off up to 60% energy cost from their lightings. Many of our clients who are offices and condominiums such as Burgundy Corporate Tower, Corinthian Plaza, and Corinthian Tower have witnessed the transformation. Table 1 is a sample calculation of energy saving resulted from replacing 100 fluorescent tubes with LED. With daily operation time of 12 hours, a cost cut of 55% resulted in yearly savings of Php 133,056 is at hand.

2. Maintenance & Operation Cost

LED Fluorescent Tubes may have higher initial cost, but it is a worthwhile investment considering the elimination of maintenance cost. LEDs lamp life of 50,000 hours compared to 6,000 hours of fluorescents is a disparity. Yearly lighting maintenance and re-lamping used to be the only choice but now has become the worst case you could take! LED hands you a warranty ticket to the most stable and long-lasting brightness which makes maintenance work your historical past.

And let us not forget the cost of ballast. Average Cost of Electronic Ballast for fluorescent tube in the Philippines is Php300 each and they consume as much as 20% of the power of your lighting system. In addition, great heat emission from fluorescent tubes is a factor that boosts your air-conditioning operation. LED puts an end to all of those prolonged avoidable expenses thanks to its ballast-free and low heat emission mechanism.

3) Performance issues
Studies have shown that children learning under fluorescent lights in schools had 10 to 21 % lower learning rates and achievement scores on standard tests. Students experienced fatigue, hyperactivity and attention deficit under fluorescent lighting (3). This has important implications not just for schools but for business too. Adequate Flicker-free light has been proven to increase productivity by a few percentage points. This increases employee productivity and becomes a major push for your bottom line.

More fascinatingly, LEDs get instant full brightness when turned on. There is no need to wait for full light when moving between rooms. Cycling on/off switching also does not degrade LED’s life while consumer reports (4) found turning CFLs on and off in less than 15 minutes degraded their life. LEDs should be used in places like schools and offices where lights can be turned on and off quickly and frequently.

4) Risk of Injury from fluorescent lights
A broken fluorescent tube exposes users to laceration injury from glass shards. The phosphor coating of the shards and the mercury content of the tube or further complicate matters can slow down healing, reduce blood clotting and increase the risk of long-term neuronal damage. LED tube lights are free from these risks thanks to high durability and non-toxic composition.

5) Superior power quality
Fluorescent lights have poor power factors. In large scale installation settings, this can adversely affect power quality. Hi-Green LED tube lights on the other hand have a high power factor of 0.9 making them ideal for conserving power quality.

6) Lifetime brightness
Fluorescent lights are notorious for rapid degradation of light outputs. Test results have shown that a large portion of these fluorescent lights failed to meet rated light output after just 40 % of their rated service life. Hi-Green LED tube has been tested to last for more than 30,000 hours.

7) The Mercury Problem & Carbon footprint
A fluorescent tube cannot work without mercury. The chemical is needed to produce visible light. Advocates of fluorescent lights may convince you that incandescent bulbs indirectly emit more mercury than fluorescent lights. But an ancient story it is.
